Friends of St. John’s

St John’s Church was founded in AD 689 by King Aethelred. It is the oldest Christian site in Chester and has a varied and colourful history. In fact it may even date back to AD 285 as a Roman/Christian site. It is still first and foremost a place of worship but it is also a great tourist attraction and is situated in close proximity to the Roman Amphitheatre, the Roman Walls and the River Dee. To allow as many people as possible to appreciate its rich history and individual architecture, the doors are open 365 days a year.

St John’s needs all the help it can get to become sustainable for future generations whilst involving as much of the community as possible. Becoming a friend gives you access to the real heart of this exciting project. St John’s Church receives no state funding and is therefore totally reliant on the generosity of visitors and other individuals, and organisations.

The Friends of St John’s was formed to help raise funds to support the Parish of Chester to maintain, preserve, improve and enhance the fabric and fittings of the Church.

Membership is open to all Persons, PCCs, Schools, Clubs, Businesses and other collective bodies from anywhere in the world.
